30 women helped us begin building our team for the upcoming 2013 season. Seasoned veterans and new players, alike, showed up on Saturday from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm and Sunday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm at University Bay Fields in Madison, WI to drill, scrimmage, and showcase their skills. Overall, our tryouts put players in game-situations in order to see play style, athleticism, skills, and abilities.
Saturday focused on person-to-person matchups on both O and D to see how players used space on O and played fundamentally sound D. We started with 3v3 mini, a Heist favorite and often incorporated into our Pod Practice agendas, and moved to a full-sized field for 3v3 half-field posessions. We moved to 4v4 full-field posessions, and were ready to begin a full game to 13. The weather was fairly calm and sunny, offering little trouble for throwing and catching, a rarity in Wisconsin.
Sunday was spent mostly in full-game scenarios, with some 3v3 endzone work in between. The wind picked up, challenging our players to make good decisions and execute on offense. It was very easy to see which women have been working on their disc skills over the past few months.
Overall, we were very impressed with the women thus far, and look forward to more new tryouts at the next weekend of OPEN tryouts on June 1-2. Until then, we welcome you this weekend for the 2013 Division-1 College Championships! Many of our players will be volunteering and working at youth skills clinics. Our city welcomes all spectators at the event with open arms, and can’t wait to share our awesome Ultimate community with all of you!
