August Flies by in Record Fashion

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates. It seems that August went by in the world’s fastest fashion! Here’s a super-update on the month of August:

Colorado Cup – Aurora, CO (August 1-2)

CO Cup

Heist spirit circle with Underground on Sunday.

Heist flew/drove to Aurora, CO to compete in the Pro-Elite Challenge 2015, the second tournament we competed in for the USA Ultimate Triple Crown Tour. Our pool featured some gritty opponents. We were able to come out strong with a win against Nemesis 12-8 (Chicago, IL). The next round, we fell in universe point fashion to Capitals 9-10 (Ontario, Canada). Coming off of a tough loss, we came out hot against Nightlock (San Francisco, CA), but let them back in mentally and physically. We fell to the San Francisco ladies 6-11. This matched us up against Ozone in the Pre-Quarter round. Even though we went down, we were able to score three consecutive breaks to tie it up after halftime. We lost some steam and fell 9-13.

KokinosAt the end of the day, we voted on our Tick Tick Boom, Crack dat Vault, You did Good, Player of the Day Spirit Lock recipient: Brittney Kokinos! She really improved her offensive prowess, and became a huge leader for our O line. Her break throws were poised and confident. She became decisive in her cuts, and opened up the field with or without the disc.  On Saturday night, our team headed for some regrouping and BBQ food. After gorging ourselves silly, we headed back to our house and crashed.

Sunday brought a new team to the fields. We came out hot and never lost our focus throughout the Sunday games, beating Underground 13-8 (Seattle, WA) and Green Means Go 13-6 (Philadelphia, PA). Offensively, we worked to correct many of the issues that plagued our flow on Saturday. Defensively, we focused in on faster transitions frRoseom zone to man, to stay in the drivers’ seat, and from D to O to capitalize on opponents mistakes.

Rose captured our Tick Tick Boom, Crack dat Vault, You did Good, Player of the Day Spirit Lock for her commitment to leading the team in a positive way on and off the field. We really appreciate her relentlessly positive attitude, and ability to hold everyone accountable to achieving their goals.

Heavyweights – Rockford, IL (August 8-9)
Heist went undefeated at Heavyweights to get momentum back for the post-season. This was our last single team tournament of the regular season, and the second tournament in three back-to-back-to-back weekends! Coffee made our first ever Heist highlight video:

Our team focused on executing regardless of who our opponent is. Offensively, that meant coming out with swagger, poise, and focus to execute in one possession. Defenviely, that meant taking control and dictating our opponents options.

We were excited to play Rival (Colombus, OH/Ann Arbor, MI) in a showcase game at the end of Saturday games in front of some friends and fans! It’s always great to showcase women’s ultimate; when it happens alongside men’s or mixed too, that means more eyes! On Sunday, we edged Nemesis 15-12 in the championship in a hard-fought game against the home team.

Two teammates who helped us focus in on these goal Tick Tick Boom, Crack dat Vault, You did Good, Player of the Day Spirit Lock, were Rachael “Romy” Romaniak (Saturday) and Eva Popp (Sunday). They had focus and helped step up the focus on the field.

Cooler Classic – Delafield, WI (August 15-16)
Our last tournament of August was most focused on building. Cooler Classic is special to us because it is the only Regular Season women’s club ultimate tournament in Wisconsin. Having this tournament so close to home is such a great opportunity to showcase women’s ultimate and help give reps against top competition for the newer women’s club teams that attend. We are always thankful for this opportunity, and want to make sure the tournament keeps happening (huge thanks Milwaukee Ultimate Club for organizing and helping ensure there was a women’s division again!).

This tournament also helps our team focus on fine tuning. We go split squad to this tournament to increase the reps with various O and D strategies. Heist-X, captained by Robyn, and Heist-Y, captained by Rose, both went undefeated vs. Frenzy (Chicago, IL), Marzannas (Milwaukee, WI) and Snap (Twin Cities, MN).

CoolerOur inter-squad games were really intense…leave it to a tournament to amp up the intensity of a scrimmage! We played twice during the course of the weekend: once on Saturday in pool play. Once on Sunday in the championship game. Heist-X came out victorious by ramping up the defensive pressure on the O line. The windy conditions on Sunday played to the strength of the D-line (Team X)’s fast transition mindset and aggressive deep game. Team X took home the Cheese Cow, Team Y took home the Cheese Wisconsin.

BraidThe Tick Tick Boom, Crack dat Vault, You did Good, Player of the Day Spirit Lock went to Alison “Braid” Vandegrift on Saturday for her fierce defense and poised, smart offense. She took advantage of poaches and out-of-position defensive players by breaking the mark and facilitating movement with the disc to the break side. She really challenged Team X to make adjustments and adapt to her smart play.

AnnaSunday’s Tick Tick Boom, Crack dat Vault, You did Good, Player of the Day Spirit Lock went to Anna Williams. She is officially healed after a biceps injury forced her to play left handed for the season thus far. Cooler was the tournament where she really fell back into her utility player role and took advantage of defensive matchups. She is great at communicating when to drop back as a handler and when to push up as a cutter–her throws looked fantastic, and you surely can’t tell she was ever hurt in the first place.

Heist is back at the grind, preparing for North Central Regionals! Two more weeks!
